Mad Jack Churchill – the eccentric military hero who fought World War II with a sword, bow, and arrows

In a war that featured, for the first time, “modern” formidable weapons such as grenades, mortars, machine guns, flamethrowers, and armored tanks, one eccentric young soldier decided early on to buck traditional convention and stick what he was most comfortable with. Thus, John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill, who came to be known as “Mad Jack,” fought in World War II using a sword, bow, and a quiver of arrows, an arsenal that proved quite effective and earned Mad Jack two Distinguished Service Orders, a Military Cross, and a promotion to commanding officer. When asked about his outdated weaponry, Mad Jack flatly stated, “In my opinion, any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed.” Romantic and sensitive, Mad Jack was an avid

Large, saucer-shaped UFO filmed near Paris, France on September 13, 2013

The following segment is from a video was shot in Suresnes, France (a suburb just west of Paris) on September 13, 2013. I’m a bit dubious of a couple of aspects of the shot, particularly one frame in the original that could indicate a hoax, but also the fact that the filmer has presented another sighting that he filmed prior to this (highly unusual). I’ll present it here anyway but take it with a grain of salt for now. According to the videographer, he was sitting in a restaurant when he spotted a long, silver object crossing the sky. At first the witness thought it was a zeppelin but then recognized that it had a “clear saucer shape, no wings in back, and no propeller”. The

Police training with new sonar equipment at local lake find SIX dead bodies in two different submerged cars

Police in southwestern Oklahoma were training with new sonar location equipment at Foss Lake on September 17, 2013 when they discovered two decades-old mud-covered vintage cars containing six skeletons at the bottom of the lake. Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers were training with the new equipment near the tiny town of Foss in Custer County, about 150 miles west of Oklahoma City. The cars were found side by side in about 12 feet of water. The first car found was a blue 1969 Chevrolet Camaro that contained the bodies of three teenagers. The second car found was a 1951 Chevrolet and also contained three bodies, believed to be all men. The 1969 Chevy Camaro, matches the description of a car driven by Jimmy Allen Williams of Sayre,

120 dead elk carcasses found near mysterious crop circle in northern New Mexico

Game and Fish investigators found 120 dead elk carcasses near a mysterious crop circle near Las Vegas, New Mexico on August 26, 2013. The animals were found about 20 miles north of Las Vegas and a few hundred yards south of the crop circle. All of the animal carcasses were found within a single square mile of ranch land and authorities noted that the deaths seemed to have happened overnight. None of the animal carcasses bore any visible wounds. Biologists have collected water and tissue samples for testing but experts noted that it is doubtful that disease was the cause of the mysterious deaths since infectious disease would have to run its course many times before such a large number of animals would die. In addition,

Down-and-out homeless man finds backpack containing $42,000. Turns it in to police. [UPDATE]

Authorities in Boston are praising a homeless man for a heroic act of honesty after the down-and-out man turned in a backpack stuffed with nearly $42,000 to local police. The homeless man found the backpack, stuffed with cash, travelers checks, and passport, in front of a T.J. Maxx inside South Bay Mall in Dorchester. The man immediately flagged down police officers and turned in the backpack. Police were contacted less than an hour later by a mall customer reporting he’d lost a backpack “containing a large sum of money”. The rightful owner was identified by his Republic of China passport and the property was returned to him. “Homeless people,” said Boisselle, a former western Massachusetts landscape designer who has been on the streets since 2005, “know

“Unlucky” Friday the 13th flight 666 to Hel has safely landed

Finnair flight AY666 from Copenhagen to Helsinki (HEL) actually took off twice on Friday the 13th with both flights being fairly full of passengers. Pilots for Flight 666 to Hel took great pains to laugh it off. “It has been quite a joke among the pilots. I'm not a superstitious man. It's only a coincidence for me." While “Hel” sounds ominous, it is actually the airport code for Helsinki, Finland, the destination of Finnair’s daily flight AY666 from Copenhagen, Denmark. The daily Flight 666 from Copenhagen to Helsinki falls on Friday the 13th twice in 2013. For those who Friday the 13th is just another day, Finnair stresses that there is nothing to be afraid of. Still, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for a little

Maine fishermen catch freaky lobster that has five human-like fingers

A crew of lobster fishermen in Maine found themselves in possession of an eerie five-fingered lobster after a recent haul. Recognizing their catch was something unusual, Capt. Peter Brown and lobsterman Richard Figueiredo of the fishing vessel Rachael Leah, delivered the specimen to the Maine State Aquarium who has put the bizarre creature, a Homarus americanus, or American lobster, on public display. They named their newest aquarium member “Lola”. Weighing in at four pounds, Lola’s right claw is normal but her left claw (also known as the crusher claw) has five human-like fingers. Aquarium management said that three of the claws can move but not all are usable. They explained to reporters that they believe the anomaly is a result of a DNA mix-up – a

River Thames residents puzzled by sudden appearance of mysterious red letterbox

Residents of Sonning-on-Thames, Berkshire say they are mystified by the appearance of a red letterbox (postal mailbox) that has appeared on a buttress on the downstream side of a bridge which crosses the River Thames. Uri Geller (the famous spoon-bending psychic), who has lived in the village for over 33 years, said he had "never seen anything like it". Royal Mail spokesperson Val Bodden was also puzzled by the mailbox’s sudden appearance on the bridge’s pillar. The letterbox is located approximately midway on the bridge and only accessible by persons in a motorboat. "The recent appearance of a postbox frontage on the side of the river bridge at Sonning is a mystery to us. It is certainly not an operational posting facility and we have no knowledge

Nebraska television station catches flashing triangular UFO on “Towercam” video. Area residents confirm sighting.

Lincoln, Nebraska television station KLKN captured, and aired on live television, video of a flashing, triangular UFO hovering for over 45 minutes on the morning horizon. Just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 4th, 2013 KLKN's high-definition “Towercam” gave Channel 8's Morning Meteorologist Sean McMullen a surprising view of the hovering UFO.  McMullen told viewers: "I have never seen anything like this before. I even say that several times while I'm on air describing the object, because I want to let people know even I don't know what this is, so I can't exactly tell you what it is.” By the time the sun came up, the object was no longer visible. McMullen says it was visible for about 45 minutes. MUFON was called in to investigate and

Scientists claim to have found alien life high in the Earth’s stratosphere

British scientists believe they have found evidence of alien life after a specially designed balloon sent 27 km into the stratosphere captured small biological organisms that they say can only have come from space. The mission was launched during the Perseid meteor shower in order to check for life amongst the meteor shower debris. The balloon carried sterile microscopic slides which were carefully protected until the balloon reached high into the stratosphere. Once the required height was reached, the slides were exposed to the atmosphere and then sealed before returning. When the balloon fell back down to Earth the scientists discovered microscopic aquatic algae on the microscope slides. In typical geek-speak, the scientists explained their findings: “The entities varied from a presumptive colony of ultra-small bacteria

Glowing UFO orb captured on video in the sky above Rome. Splits into two, then three, separate orbs.

An amateur astronomer was filming satellites using a night vision camera when this odd UFO glided across his field of view. The object appears first as a large, glowing orb before tracking to the left and splitting into two, and then three, separate orbs. The video was captured around 1:00 AM on September 5, 2013 in the sky above Rome, Italy. You can check out the Rome glowing orb UFO video below the break. Man tricks demolition crew into tearing down his neighbor’s home. Neighbors rejoice.

Lately we’ve seen several reports of demolition crews levelling the wrong house. This week, a Michigan man whose home was slated to be torn down took advantage of the situation in order to get rid of an unsightly neighbor’s home. The man switched his address numbers with those of his neighbor resulting in confused demolition crews tearing down the wrong house instead. Neighbors cheered the man’s action explaining that the demolished home had been an eyesore and haven for crackheads for several years. “When I heard they tore down the house on accident I wanted to give them a twelve pack of beer," neighbor Fred Sargent told local television station WXYZ. "I was that happy.” Unfortunately for the man behind the apparent ruse, his reprieve lasted only a

New York garage worker drives car into empty elevator shaft – plummets over three stories and survives

A Manhattan garage worker survived when the car he was driving plummeted three and a half stories down an empty elevator shaft. The unidentified worker, who was driving a black Audi in the Sterling Garage on E. 80th St., thought the elevator bed was on the fifth floor and drove the car into the elevator opening. His car plunged down the elevator shaft and became stuck, upside down, between the first and second floors. The man escaped by climbing through the car’s moon roof and was helped out of the shaft by other workers. He was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Firefighters worked to remove the car from the shaft throughout the day last Thursday. Strangely, it is not the first time
