The Boston Molasses Flood – 21 people killed in Boston streets by tidal wave of Molasses (1919)

The Great Molasses Flood (aka Boston Molasses Disaster) At the time, molasses was a common sweetener and used to produce ethanol for alcoholic beverages and military munitions. It was of course, in high demand. The five-story tall steel tank at 529 Commercial Street in Boston held 2.3 million gallons of molasses weighing an astonishing 26 million pounds. On January 15, 1919, the weather was warmer than normal, allowing the molasses inside the tank to heat up and thin. At 12:30 in the afternoon, persons in the area heard a “sound like a rumble” and the ground shook. The Purity Distilling Company molasses tank had burst, releasing millions of gallons of molasses into the streets of Boston. The tidal wave of molasses that rushed through the streets of

Down-and-out homeless man finds backpack containing $42,000. Turns it in to police. [UPDATE]

Authorities in Boston are praising a homeless man for a heroic act of honesty after the down-and-out man turned in a backpack stuffed with nearly $42,000 to local police. The homeless man found the backpack, stuffed with cash, travelers checks, and passport, in front of a T.J. Maxx inside South Bay Mall in Dorchester. The man immediately flagged down police officers and turned in the backpack. Police were contacted less than an hour later by a mall customer reporting he’d lost a backpack “containing a large sum of money”. The rightful owner was identified by his Republic of China passport and the property was returned to him. “Homeless people,” said Boisselle, a former western Massachusetts landscape designer who has been on the streets since 2005, “know

The Boston Strangler – serial killer terrorizes Boston killing 13 woman in unsolved crime wave (1962)

Between June 14, 1962 and January 4, 1964, 13 single women in the Boston area were victims of a deranged serial killer, or serial killers, who seemed to take pleasure in strangling his victims. While the police did not see all of these murders as the work of a single individual, the public believed all of the murders were related and that a monster was running rampant through their city. All of the victims were murdered in their apartments, had been sexually molested, and were strangled with articles of clothing. With no signs of forced entry, the women apparently knew their assailant or, at least, believing them to be an apartment maintenance man, delivery man, or some other service man, had voluntarily let him in

New DNA tests identify Albert DeSalvo as the infamous Boston Strangler

A major development in the infamous Boston Strangler case happened today. The most well-known suspect in the killings, Albert DeSalvo, confessed to 13 murders in the 1960′s (DeSalvo was killed in prison in 1973). Despite DeSalvo’s confession, he was never charged because the confession was ruled inadmissible in court (some say after a lengthy negotiation between the prosecutors and defense). However, DeSalvo was sentenced to life in prison on unrelated charges involving armed robberies and sexual assaults. Now, police say DNA evidence has put them in a position to “formally charge Albert DeSalvo with the murder of Mary Sullivan”, the 1964 murder that is generally believed to be the last Boston Strangler victim. DNA in that case had previously been tested ten years ago but test

When news broke that the wife of Boston Marathon bomber, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, spoke with her husband on the phone after his pictures and video appeared across the country as the prime suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings, authorities focused on telephone calls between Russell and Tsarnaev that took place both before and after the attack to determine if she had prior knowledge of the plot or participated in any way.  On May 1, 2013, CNN ran a segment on the story on their Outfront show discussing how the wife could be implicated in the Boston Marathon bombings through electronic conversations.  CNN Host Erin Burnett discussed with his guest, former Counterterrorism Agent for the FBI, Tim Clemente, how voice mail could certainly be used to implicate

Terrorist attack at Boston Marathon – the Boston Marathon bombing (2013)

At the 2013 Boston Marathon, two explosions happened at about 2:50 p.m. (within a 10-minute window of the average marathon-runner's finish time), more than two hours after the first of the race's nearly 27,000 runners had crossed the finish line.  The explosions went off near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, killing at least three people (including an 8-year-old boy who was waiting for his father to cross the finish line) and injuring nearly 200 more, as runners completed the course and thousands cheered them on.  A third blast at the John F. Kennedy Library was initially thought to be related but later attributed to fire.  Witnesses described victims and frightened civilians running for cover while others sprinted towards the blast site

Clark Rockefeller – AKA Karl Gerhartsreiter – Master Con Man

Introduction He’s a brilliant con man who managed to convince Boston’s elite that he was a rich heir. He hosted lavish parties, drove expensive cars, and even owned a yacht.  Despite the apparent riches, he had no job and no apparent source of income. He was a person of interest in a double homicide who has changed his persona multiple times, all the while avoiding the probing eyes of the police. He even married a high profile attorney, convincing her he was a member of the Rockefeller family. After kidnapping his own daughter, police finally discovered the true identity of Clark Rockefeller.  He was Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter, a German immigrant with a penchant for lying. Christian Karl Gerhartsreiter was born February 21, 1961 in Germany to Simon
